Basic Info
Name:Subaru Sakurazuka
Birthdate:1966-02-19
Bio
Name: Subaru Sakurazuka (OU: Subaru Sumeragi)
Fandom: Tokyo Babylon/X
OU or AU: AU
Personality: Subaru is a shy, naive man most of the time. He speaks little, and when he does it's awkward and he stumbles over his words. He apologizes over the smallest things, and seems to want to do his best to please. He's helpful, kind, and considerate, and he acts considerably younger than his age.

However, when it comes to his work, Subaru can often be cold and dangerous. He has been trained and raised to put aside his own feelings in order to do his job, and so he ignores his natural compassion and does the best work he can. He'll kill most people with only a slight cringe, and he can be truly cold when he needs to. He has some remorse, but he can ignore it - his own feelings aren't that important.

He's not flawlessly cold, though. He finds it nearly impossible to hurt small children, and every time he's had to he's cried for weeks on end. In addition, the contrast between his desires and his actions is starting to drive him slightly insane, and he has long conversations with his sister's half-sentient entrapped ghost, the tree, and other similar things.
History: Subaru Sakurazuka was born 9 minutes behind his twin, Hokuto Sakurazuka. Both were potential heirs to the title of "Sakurazukamori" - an assassin for the Japanese government that used the skills of an onmyouji and illusions derived from a semi-sentient cherry tree to kill.

Their mother, Setsuka, raised them in a way that was motherly, caring, and completely mad. She'd alternate - one moment she'd lavishing them with praise and kisses that broke the line of motherly affection and the next instant she'd be breaking their fingers. In addition, many other figures from the Japanese government helped train and raise them as well, all in cold, hurtful ways. The idea was to make them detach from human emotions and human society. A killer with emotions and a conscience was too dangerous, and so the idea was to make sociopaths.

With Hokuto, they succeeded. Hokuto was friendly and happy on the surface, willing to design outfits for her brother and hang out, but she killed small animals with not even a flicker in her cheerful smile. Subaru didn't do it as well. He just always forgave his mother and his sister and the men, and he continued to like them and like animals and feel emotions toward things. He learned to hide it, though, and eventually he learned to kill without flinching too.

Eventually, it came time for the title of Sakurazukamori to pass on. The ritual was simple - kill the former Sakurazukamori. The presence of twins complicated, though, as there was only meant to be one Sakurazukamori and they killed Setsuka working together. For a while, though, they made it work. They worked together to kill the targets assigned to them, and it worked well.

But Hoktuo had always liked tradition, and she realized that the equation was unstable and dangerous, and so one day she smiled cheerily at her brother and reached out to stab him.

She lost the fight that resulted - Subaru had always had more magical power, even if he was more unwilling. However, he didn't want the tree to consume her soul like it consumed the souls of most of his victims, and so he bound it forcefully to the Sakurazuka mansion. The result was a half-transparent, completely mad copy of Hokuto that roamed the mansion and occasionally advised her brother in a broken way. Subaru came to see her as the only one he could be honest with, and so he talked to the ghost frequently while he was at home, even if her replies rarely if ever made sense.

A year or so after that, Subaru was making another kill inside one of his illusions when a small boy with golden-brown eyes somehow wandered in. Subaru was surprised at first - his illusions were supposed to be unbreakable - but then he noticed the Sumeragi ceremonial gear that the boy wore. The boy saw the corpse that Subaru had impaled, and although Subaru quickly knocked him out, he was worried. Even if he bound the boy's memories, someone with that much spiritual power could potentially break through the seals. Still, he didn't want to kill the boy, and so he sealed his memories and marked the back of his hands with the symbol of the Sakurazuka family - an inverted pentagram. The idea was that if the boy grew to be a problem, he could track him down and eliminate him. He woke the boy up, told him to be more careful, and let him go.

A few years passed before they met again. Finally, when Subaru was 24, he saw a tall, strong-looking teen walking down a train station platform, wearing gloves. Beneath the gloves, although the signal was muffled, Subaru could sense the marks he had left years before. Deciding that this was a good chance to track the Sumeragi and to find out if the boy remembered anything, he used his illusions to make the boy trip, then walked over to help him up. Quickly, the two got to talking, and Subaru discovered that the boy was Seishirou Sumeragi - confirming his past suspicions. Subaru took him to his Tokyo apartment to get him painkillers, and Seishirou played with the man's numerous pets. (Subaru liked pets, but he also used them (unwillingly) as a barrier from the negative backlash of his magic. While he hated hurting his pets, it was necessary, and so he did it.)

The two met several times after that, as a friendship started to form. Seishirou was outgoing and a charmer, while Subaru was just as shy and awkward around strangers as he had always been. (This was partially faked, an exaggeration of his own natural tendencies to make himself appear more innocent than he actually was.) Soon, Seishirou began to openly flirt with Subaru, which completely confused and flustered the man most of the time. Seishirou seemed to find his embarassment charming, and he continued to flirt more and more, declaring his love frequently.

It was soon obvious that Seishirou was the Sumeragi heir - he didn't hide it too well, and he frequently allowed Subaru to come along on exorcisms. He was a strong, confident onmyouji who showed little or no mercy toward the spirits he exorcised. A few times, though, he got in over his head and Subaru stepped in secretly to save him for reasons that even Subaru couldn't fully explain.

Finally, Subaru came down with the flu and Seishirou took him to the clinic for medicine despite the man's protests that it wasn't needed. While there, they met a small boy named Yuya who was on dialysis. Seishirou and Subaru both took a liking to him, with Seishirou overloading him with sweets and Subaru sharing his favorite books. When they heard that the boy needed a kidney transplant urgently, Subaru volunteered - this wasn't a burden that would impose on his job as Sakurazukamori, as he'd still have one functional kidney.

He went to go tell Yuya's mother of his decision, but the woman, pushed to the edge by her son's condition, attacked him wildly with a scalpel. Subaru found himself seemingly paralyzed, about to die - but Seishirou stepped in, and the woman drove the scalpel into the boy's eye.

Seishirou was taken to the emergency room, while Subaru found himself weeping in front of the doors. Finally, someone took him away and he managed to get himself home, but he was numb. He kept finding himself weeping at random moments, and he couldn't stop thinking about Seishirou - but he couldn't bring himself to visit the other man. He thought that Seishirou might reject him outright. Finally, he went back to Kyoto briefly, to visit his sister.

For once, she was almost lucid, and her words brought him back to reality.

"The Sakurazukamori shouldn't have connections. Why do you care what happens to him?"

She was right, of course. Subaru felt far too much for the boy. He had been breaking every rule he had been taught by his mother. He had to stop this before he went too far. He was too close to actually falling in love.

And so he went back to Tokyo and went to visit the recovering Seishirou. Before the boy could even speak, he wrapped them both in an illusion and began to explain the truth to the boy. He released the bonds on Seishirou's memory and told him that he had never felt anything for him. (The lie hurt, but he swallowed it down.) At first Seishirou was stunned, but quickly shock turned to anger against the one who had betrayed his love - the Sakurazukamori. The two began to fight, but Seishirou was weakened from his stay in the hospital and less experienced than Subaru. However, Subaru hesitated as he was about to strike the killing blow, and the illusion broke - Seishirou's grandmother, the previous Sumeragi head, had broken the illusion.

Subaru fled the scene of the crime, pursued by a determined Seishirou. The two continued to avoid and hunt each other until one morning Subaru woke up in a strange room.
